UDWARTHANAM AYURVEDIC THERAPY: REFRESH AND REJUVENATE YOUR BODY
The Udwarthanam massage is a therapeutic deep tissue massage which is performed with rubbing oil and herbal powder applied in upward strokes. The intensity of the massage generates heat which then melts the excess fat in your body. Hence, the Udwarthanam Ayurvedic massage is widely sought-after by individuals looking to lose weight. Besides, it can also work very well to improve the immunity and lymphatic flow of the body.
According to the classical treatises on Ayurveda, the Udwarthanam massage was followed as a daily routine. Sometimes, the massage is given along with Shirodhara or Takradhara treatments for the best outcomes.
Types of Udwarthanam Massage
Udwarthanam can be classified into two types based on the action of the powder massage.
Snigadh or Sneha Udwarthanam
In this form of Udwarthanam massage, a herbal paste prepared with a mixture of powdered herbs and medicated oils is used. The paste is then vigorously rubbed over the skin to exfoliate the skin, rejuvenate it and prevent skin disorders. It also improves its glow, texture, complexion and tone.
As per Charaka Samhita, the ancient Sanskrit text on Ayurveda, Snigadh Udwarthanam can be particularly useful for weak people and those with sensitive skin on which dry herbal powders can’t be used.
Ruksha Udwarthanam
This massage involves rubbing the dry powders of herbs on the body. The rough and dry nature of the herbal ingredients is useful for the reduction of excess Kapha. The Ruksha Udwarthanam massage also aims at reducing excess cellulite and fat under the skin. Moreover, it is beneficial for individuals with insulin resistance and obesity.
Other types of Udwarthanam as mentioned by Sushruta Samhita are –
Utsadana: It is the same as Snigadh Udwarthanam which involves the use of herbal paste for the massage.
Udgharshana: It is similar to Rukhsha Udwarthanam, and the only difference lies in the ingredients used that Sushruta Samhita has specifically described, such as Reetha or Triphala powder.
Udwarthanam Massage Composition
The herbal paste used in Udwarthanam treatment is also called Lepam, which is prepared with milk, herbal oils with healing properties, beans, dried herbal powders (Choornams), etc. Some of the common herbs that may be used in the mixture are deodar, senna, horse gram, cestus, gooseberry, mustard, bellerica, myrobalan, and Phyllanthus.
The Ayurvedic herbs used for the Udwarthanam are selected based on the aim of the treatment and body constitution of the individual. For example, if the aim is weight loss and the individual have a dominant Kapha constitution, the recommended herbal powder is Triphala, a mixture of Emblica Officinalis (Amalaki), Terminalia bellirica (Bibhitaki), and Terminalia Chebula (Haritaki). On the other hand, Pitta dominant individuals looking to lose weight should go for ingredients like Cyperus Rotundus or Nutgrass, Barley or Yava churna, Indian Valerian or Tagara, Mandukaparni or Gotu Kola, Amalaki, Haritaki, etc.
For weight loss, oils like Triphala, Kottamchukkadi Thailam, Lavana Oil, Dhanwantharam Thailam, Karpasasthyadi Thailam may be used. Oils like Chandanadi, Kumkumadi and Sandalwood are used in the massage for beautiful and glowing skin.
Udwarthanam Massage Procedure
The herbal paste or powder used in Udwarthanam treatment is warmed before application. It is usually performed by two therapists who ensure that the massage strokes are done in a direction opposite to the growth of the hair follicles. The individual receiving the therapy needs to be in seven postures during the massage, and once the procedure is complete, they are advised to rest for about 30 minutes followed by a warm water bath.
A step by step breakdown of the procedure is mentioned below.
Step 1: The herbal Udwarthanam paste is rubbed on the body by the Ayurvedic practitioner. Any skin issues must be informed to the therapist or practitioner before the procedure. If the individual has sensitive skin, usually herbs mixed with sesame or olive oil are used.
Step 2: Once the herbal powder or paste has been applied on the body, it is allowed to let it rest for a while.
Step 3: Udwarthanam treatment consists of several techniques that are performed to break down the fat layers in the body. During the massage, the masseuse applies pressure on different points on the body to release the toxins.
Step 4: Finally, lukewarm water is prepared for the bath. The entire procedure takes somewhere around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
