Empowering Sustainable Living: A Glimpse into Govardhan Ecovillage’s Energy Conservation Initiatives
In the heart of Govardhan Ecovillage (GEV), a spiritual community based on ISKCON teachings, a transformative journey unfolds towards spirituality and sustainability. Our community, guided by the ethos of “simple living, high thinking,” is committed to fostering a sacred space for heart transformation.
One of GEV’s paramount objectives is aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all. Two solar power plants, boasting a total capacity of 300 KW, illuminate the community with an average daily generation of 1000-1200 units. Currently, in the year 2022-23: 55% of the energy is met by Solar, contributing excess energy back to the grid through net metering. Solar Water Pumps, efficiently drawing water from 2 wells through 3 hp, 5 hp, and 10 hp solar-connected motors.
Heat Pump is used instead of Geyser to heat the water for domestic purpose in three buildings of the places. A heat pump saves 2 times more energy than a geyser. They are considered more environmentally friendly due to higher energy efficiency.
The commitment to clean energy extends to transportation, where bicycles and electric carts gracefully navigate the eco-friendly enclave. These vehicles not only reduce carbon emissions but also exemplify GEV’s embrace of modern, sustainable technologies.
A cornerstone of GEV’s energy strategy lies in the biogas plant, ingeniously fueled by the daily produce of our cherished Goshala. With 100+ cows and bulls, we transform 400 kg of cow dung into a potent energy source, equivalent to 1.21 LPG cylinders. Beyond energy, this innovative approach contributes to enriched manure for agriculture and promotes hygienic waste disposal.
In the realm of architecture, GEV showcases its commitment to green building practices. Utilizing Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) instead of traditional red bricks significantly reduces embodied energy, promoting environmentally friendly construction. CSEB blocks also provide good thermal insulation, helping to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce the need for additional heating or cooling. The use of locally sourced materials and low embodied energy choices eco-friendly buildings, totaling 289,600 sq ft, resulted in GEV receiving prestigious accolades like GRIHA 5 Star, IGBC Platinum Rating, and the WTM Responsible Tourism Award.
Moreover, GEV’s adoption of energy-efficient appliances, such as BLDC fans and heat pumps, further underscores our commitment to sustainable living. BLDC fan technology uses a Brushless Direct Current motor that cuts power consumption by 65%.
As we celebrate Energy Conservation Day, Govardhan Ecovillage stands as a shining example of a harmonious blend between spirituality and sustainability. Through our conscientious efforts, GEV not only illuminates the path towards a greener future but also inspires communities worldwide to embrace the transformative power of sustainable living. By seamlessly blending ancient wisdom with modern technology, GEV paves the way for a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Cultivating Change: Govardhan Ecovillage’s Comprehensive Solutions to Farmers’ Struggles
The average age of farmers in India hovers around 51, posing a critical question about the future of farming. The youth’s disinterest in agriculture creates a looming threat. Monocropping exacerbates the problem, diminishing food diversity and impacting nutrition. Hybrid seeds, while boosting production, tether farmers to external dependencies, this dependency disrupts the traditional farming autonomy, leaving farmers vulnerable to market fluctuations and corporate influence.
