Reducing Food Waste to Nourish Hearts and Souls
In the heart of India, nestled amidst lush greenery and echoing the harmonious chants of the Hare Krishna mantra, lies Govardhan Ecovillage, a spiritual and sustainable community deeply rooted in the teachings of ISKCON. More than just a sanctuary for spiritual seekers, our vibrant community has embarked on an incredible mission – the reduction of food waste.
At the core of Govardhan Ecovillage’s ethos is the belief that food is a sacred offering, a prasadam dedicated to the Lord. With daily gatherings of over 300 community members and an additional 1000+ visitors partaking in the community’s free lunch at the enchanting Lalita Bhavan, the need for an initiative to reduce food waste became apparent.
This noble endeavor commenced on Balram Jayanti 31st August’23, a day of spiritual significance, and has since become a cornerstone of the community’s efforts. This remarkable journey in reducing food waste has been embraced by the kitchen and the sustainability team, who are committed to preserving the sanctity of the food offered to the Lord.
A pivotal element of our approach involves the kitchen team. They have been sensitized to serve smaller portions, enabling visitors to take second servings if required. By informing visitors about the names of the food items before serving, they ensure that everyone can make informed choices, reducing unnecessary food waste.
Making impactful announcements is another aspect of our campaign. We encourage visitors to take only the amount of food they can consume and to avoid wasting it. This conscious reminder about the spiritual significance of the food resonates with the community and visitors alike, emphasizing that wasting prasadam is a missed opportunity to experience divine grace.
One of the pillars of this initiative is the presence of the sustainability team near the dustbins, offering gentle reminders to visitors about the sacred nature of the food they hold in their hands. We eloquently request all to refrain from wasting this prasadam, the divine offering to the Lord. Through our compassionate interactions, the team seeks to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness among those partaking in the meals.
The impact of these efforts has been both remarkable and heartening. The members of Govardhan Ecovillage have observed a significant reduction in food waste within the community. This reduction is most pronounced during festivals like Janmashtami, Radhashtami, and weekends when the crowds swell, and the need for vigilance is at its peak.
One particularly striking example of success was witnessed on Janmashtami, a day of immense significance in the ISKCON tradition. In the previous year, a staggering 2 tons of food were left uneaten, a regrettable squandering of prasadam. However, through the tireless efforts of Govardhan Ecovillage’s Kitchen and sustainability team, this year’s Janmashtami celebration saw a remarkable reduction, with 450 kg of food waste.
This initiative embodies the very essence of sustainability, combining spiritual values with practical solutions. It not only addresses the pressing issue of food waste but also raises awareness about the sanctity of food in the ISKCON tradition. By educating visitors and encouraging mindfulness in consumption, Govardhan Ecovillage has managed to strike a balance between the need for sustenance and the obligation to treat every meal as an offering to the divine.
In a world grappling with the grave consequences of food wastage, Govardhan Ecovillage’s pioneering effort stands as a beacon of hope. By sensitizing our community and visitors, we exemplify the change that is possible when spirituality and sustainability walk hand in hand. Our commitment to reducing food waste is a testament to the power of collective action and mindful living.
As we continue our journey in reducing food waste, the efforts serve as a compelling example of how spirituality, sustainability, and simple acts of compassion can change the world, one meal at a time.

Cultivating Change: Govardhan Ecovillage’s Comprehensive Solutions to Farmers’ Struggles
The average age of farmers in India hovers around 51, posing a critical question about the future of farming. The youth’s disinterest in agriculture creates a looming threat. Monocropping exacerbates the problem, diminishing food diversity and impacting nutrition. Hybrid seeds, while boosting production, tether farmers to external dependencies, this dependency disrupts the traditional farming autonomy, leaving farmers vulnerable to market fluctuations and corporate influence.
